Mrs. Doyle’s Cross

I found Mrs. Doyle’s cross this morning. I was trying to make room in my file cabinet for the homily notes that I have been saving for 45 years.  And there it was.

The Doyle family lived three doors down from us when I was growing up.  We all lived in row homes, about 11 ½ feet wide, each sharing a wall with our neighbors, and the Doyle wall was just 23 feet away.  As neighbors we were all very close.  […]

We Remember, We Seek to be Healed, We Go Forward in Hope

On Saturday, April 16, I presided at the 8th Annual Memorial Service for Victims of Violence, War, and Genocide in Africa at St. Thomas More Parish. Below is the homily I shared:

This is the 8th annual gathering in the Archdiocese of Louisville to gather as one body of Christ.  We gather to remember, to seek to be healed, and to go forward in hope – all because we do so in the pattern and through the gaze of Jesus […]

Pope Francis’ The Joy of Love

Dr. Lejeune’s Heroic Virtue

No one likely sets out in life to practice heroic virtue.  Even the most fervent among us seeks to live a happy life founded on virtuous living or an adventurous and interesting life or perhaps both.  But it is hard to imagine that the heroic, which necessarily includes a love that is sacrificial, is present at the outset.

During the Easter Season, we read so many adventures of the early church and especially of St. Peter and St. Paul.  Their activities […]
