Junipero Serra

Blessed Junipero Serra, O.F.M.

Siempre Adelate or “Always Forward” was the motto of Junipero Serra. The Franciscan Friar was a very successful teacher of philosophy on the Spanish Island of Mallorca before coming to Mexico and California. Instead of being a scholar, he followed in the footsteps of his missionary heroes such as St. Francis of Assisi.  After working with the Indians for 16 years in Mexico, he established nine missions, such as San Juan Capistrano along the coastline of California. In 1784 he died and is buried at the Mission San Carlos Borromeo.

Junipero Serra is the patron of vocations. He will be the first saint canonized on American soil and the first American saint of Spanish descent.

This event is sponsored by the Serra Club of Louisville, whose primary mission is to support and promote religious vocations in our community, schools, churches, and media. For more than 60 years, the Serra Club of Louisville has been supporting priests, seminarians, deacons, sisters, and religious in our area through prayer and actions.
