Saint Leonard Students Celebrate Christmas Around the World
(Louisville, KY) Saint Leonard School (440 Zorn Avenue) first-grade students are completing a “Christmas Around the World” unit. Students created passports and airline tickets in order to visit 10 countries to learn the customs and traditions of each location. Countries being studied include the United States, Sweden, England, Poland, Germany, Holland, Italy, France, Ireland and Mexico.
The unit will culminate on Friday, December 16, with a special event involving Christmas customs in Mexico. Students will perform a skit at the school-wide prayer service in honor of the Mexican tradition of la posada. This will take place at 9:00 a.m. in the Church. La posada is a 9-day Mexican festival beginning on December 16 that involves children dressing up to re-enact Mary and Joseph’s difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter.

Catholic High School Placement Test – December 10, 2011
Students in 8th grade who wish to attend a Catholic high school next year are required to take the Catholic high school placement test scheduled on Saturday, December 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Students take the test at the high school they plan to attend. They must bring a $10 fee and two #2 pencils.
The placement test helps Catholic secondary schools determine the most appropriate course work and academic path for meeting the needs of each student.

St. Jude Foundation Funds Expansion of Family Focus Life Skills Curriculum at the Catholic Enrichment Center
(Louisville, KY) Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., and representatives from the St. Jude Foundation will announce details about the expansion of the Family Focus Life Skills Curriculum at the Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center (3146 West Broadway) on Thursday, December 1, at 11:00 a.m.
For 11 years, the Catholic Enrichment Center has served West Louisville through intergenerational cultural enrichment, academic development, and outreach services. This new grant expands the St. Jude Family Focus Life Skills Curriculum program, which seeks to assist families in creating sustainable success through life skills training in a nurturing and home-like environment.
After a brief program at approximately 11:15 a.m., a light lunch and tours of the facility will be offered.
The Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM), one of 19 service agencies of the Archdiocese of Louisville, exists to give direction and leadership to the full and holistic development of our growing and diverse Catholic community. OMM provides resources to the local Church in its effort to respond to diverse ethnic pastoral needs and concerns. It utilizes local and national resources to foster holistic development from a cultural perspective and encourages the full participation of the multicultural community through the implementation of the archdiocesan strategic plan in collaboration with various national ethnic pastoral plans.

Deacon John Russell Johnson to be Ordained to the Priesthood
Louisville, KY – On Saturday, August 27, 2011, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., will ordain John Russell Johnson, Jr. to the diocesan priesthood for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. The ordination will take place at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 South Fifth Street.
Johnson, 61, is a native of Louisville, Ky., and is the son of John R. Johnson, Sr. (deceased) and Suzanna Veronica Profumo. Johnson received a bachelor of arts from the University of Louisville; a M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary (Methodist affiliated); a Masters in Anglican Studies from Seabury-Western Seminary (Episcopal affiliated); and a M. Theology from Saint Meinrad Seminary. In addition to his religious and ministerial background, Johnson worked for Food for the Poor as a preacher for the poor from 1996-1998.
Johnson has been ordained as and has served as a Methodist minister and an Episcopal priest. Johnson and his wife of 43 years, Sherry, who is a nurse, have 2 sons, David and Chris, and 2 grandchildren. Johnson is the second man seeking priesthood in the Archdiocese of Louisville under the special “Pastoral Provision,” created in 1980 by the Holy See. This process allows married Episcopal priests to be ordained to the Catholic priesthood after an appropriate period of intellectual, pastoral, and spiritual formation.
Johnson will serve as a diocesan priest within the Archdiocese of Louisville and has been assigned as the Assistant to the Pastor at Holy Spirit Parish. He will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Spirit Parish, 3345 Lexington Road, Louisville, Ky., on Sunday, August 28 at 10:00 a.m.

Ascension School PE Pockets, Thanksgiving Drive, and Christmas Play
(Louisville, KY) Ascension School (4600 Lynnbrook Drive) students have embarked on a new approach to physical fitness through PE Pockets. Each morning, students and teachers participate in 10-15 minutes of physical activities such as relay races, jogging, walking, line dancing, folk dancing, push-ups, jumping jacks and other fitness exercises. (Students also participate in less structured physical activity for 5 minutes in the afternoon.) Teachers have reported greater focus in the classroom and fitness in the students as a result of this project, which has increased physical exercise for each student from 50 minutes each week to 100-120 minutes each week. The PE Pockets take place on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. and on Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.
Ascension school and parish combined to collect approximately 2,500 cans for local food pantries and the parish’s Thanksgiving baskets. The custodian, Jim Grider, had challenged students to bring in cans and volunteered to shave his head if they brought in at least 2,000 cans. Because of the success of this drive, Mr. Grider will have his head shaved at the school on Tuesday, November 29, at 12:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, December 13, at 7:00 p.m. Ascension students in grades K-5 will perform a Christmas musical entitled Angels Aware that explains the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ. The event will be held in the Church and is free and open to the public.

Saint Leonard Preschool Students Participate in Service Project
(Louisville, KY) Saint Leonard School (440 Zorn Avenue) preschool students are participating in their first school service project. In conjunction with Scholastic Books, students are collecting and donating new pairs of child-sized pajamas for other children in need. For each pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic also donates a book to a child in need.
The students will travel to the Home of the Innocents on Wednesday, November 30 at 10:00 a.m. to deliver their pajamas and visit the children at this facility.

Archdiocese of Louisville Honors 4,250 Years of Teaching Service

National CEO of Humane Society Speaks at St. Raphael School
(Louisville, KY) St. Raphael School (2131 Lancashire Avenue) will welcome Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, to speak to students in grades 5-8. He will speak at the school on Friday, November 4, at 9:15 a.m.
Pacelle, author of The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them, will talk with students about the work of the Humane Society. Since 2008, students at St. Raphael have been involved with the Shamrock Pet Foundation. They began by choosing a dog at Metro Animal Services, paying for his release and necessary medical treatment, naming him, and seeing him through to his adoption. In addition, students have raised approximately $1200 annually for the foundation.
During his tenure as Humane Society of the United States president and CEO, Pacelle has spurred major growth for the organization, which is now the nation’s largest animal protection organization with 11 million members and constituents, annual revenue of $160 million, and assets of more than $200 million. He was named to the role of president and CEO in 2004.

Schuhmann Center Renovation Completed
(Louisville, KY) On Monday, October 24, St. Martin of Tours Parish will host a celebration to observe the reopening and renovation of the Schuhmann Center (730 East Gray Street). This event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a brief thanksgiving service in St. Martin Church (639 South Shelby Street) followed by a half-block walk to the Schuhmann Center for a blessing of the Center and a reception. The public is invited.
For 29 years the Schumann Center has provided clothing, food and household items to the impoverished and homeless. During the month of August the Schuhmann Center experienced two burglaries that resulted in extensive damage. Though these events caused the Center to close its doors for two months, they also provided the opportunity for a total renovation of the facility.
The Schuhmann Center and St. Martin Parish are excited to enter the 30th year of this outreach effort in these newly renovated quarters. Please join us for the celebration.

Piano Virtuoso Eric Genuis to Perform at St. Patrick on October 23
(Louisville, KY) Composer and piano virtuoso Eric Genuis will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 23, in the St. Patrick Church sanctuary (1000 North Beckley Station Road). This is Genuis’ only scheduled appearance in Louisville this year. Admission is free, but reservations are required.
This concert appearance will be a rare treat for parishioners and guests to see and hear the well-traveled Genuis, who has received praise from music industry greats such as Joel Sill (Music Supervisor, Munich, Forest Gump), John Debney (Film Composer, The Passion of the Christ, Spy Kids) and famed British Maestro, Allen Wilson, with whom Genuis has collaborated to produce four CDs of his original works.
At St. Patrick, Genuis will perform original works including “Conquest,” “Caprice for Violin,” “Romanza Tranquilla,” “Angels in Disguise,” “Panis Angelicus” and “Valor.” Genuis will be joined by vocalist Liela Avila, trumpeter Lorenzo Trujillo and violinist Eric Wuest. Genuis combines classical and contemporary styles in soaring compositions that inspire listeners.

Catholic Elementary Teachers Gather for Opening School Rally
Approximately 700-800 teachers from 39 Catholic elementary schools will gather on Friday, August 12, to celebrate the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. This event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center in Shepherdsville, Ky. (See agenda below.) The theme is “Be Transformed by the Renewing of Your Minds.”
After the welcome and prayer by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., and the presentation of the Ulmer teacher awards by the Catholic Education Foundation, educators will enjoy a presentation by Chicago-based Wavelength. An award-winning ensemble of professional actors and educators, Wavelength uses humor, laughter and improvisation to train and inspire educational professionals. Entitled “The Seven Habits of Highly Ineffective Educators,” this program will allow teachers to laugh, learn and build rapport while they reflect on their practice.

Archdiocese of Louisville Announces New Executive Director of Catholic School Athletic Association
(Louisville, KY) Reverend Thomas E. Gentile, Chair of the Catholic School Athletic Association (CSAA), announced today the appointment of Richard J. Arnold as the new Executive Director of the CSAA. Mr. Arnold succeeds Mr. James Frame, who has served as Executive Director since 1983.
Mr. Arnold, 43, spent 20 years in public service as a police officer and deputy sheriff and has extensive experience in coaching at the collegiate, secondary, and elementary level. He served in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office from 1991 to 1996 and as a detective in the homicide, major case, and domestic violence units in the Louisville Metro and Jefferson County Police Departments from 1996 until his retirement this year. Mr. Arnold was the head junior varsity and assistant varsity baseball coach at St. Xavier and an assistant and volunteer baseball coach at the University of Louisville. He also coached both football and baseball at Ascension Parish and for youth sports leagues. Mr. Arnold has a bachelor of science in police administration from the University of Louisville.
The Catholic School Athletic Association is an association of participating Catholic parishes that organizes and establishes policies for elementary level athletics. The CSAA is governed by a board of directors, led by a priest chair who is appointed by the Archbishop.
In making the announcement, Fr. Gentile emphasized Mr. Arnold’s commitment to Christian values in athletics: “Rick’s philosophy clearly centers on ensuring that Christian values are at the heart and soul of our association and that promoting good sportsmanship, fair competition, learning, integrity, and encouragement for student athletes must be the focus of all parish sports programs. We look forward to working with him.”
Mr. Arnold and his wife Kathy have two children and are members of St. Albert Parish. He will begin his new position November 1 and work with Jim Frame until Mr. Frame’s retirement next March.

Matthew Thomas Hardesty Ordained to the Priesthood for Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville
(Louisville, KY) On Saturday, May 28, 2011, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., will ordain Matthew Thomas Hardesty to the diocesan priesthood for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. The ordination will take place at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 South Fifth Street.
Hardesty, 31, is a native of Owensboro and the son of Perry and Jan Hardesty of Owensboro. Hardesty attended Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, Ky., graduating in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in computer information systems. After graduation, he went to work for INVESCO in Louisville, Ky., as a software developer. Hardesty resigned from INVESCO in August 2005 to begin studies at Saint Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, where he will earn a master of divinity and a bachelor of sacred theology (a pontifical degree granted from Rome through Saint Mary’s) in 2011.
In addition to his seminary study and various parish summer assignments, Hardesty served a pastoral year in 2008 at St. Athanasius in Louisville, Ky., and completed The Institute for Priestly Formation at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., during the summer of 2009.
Hardesty will serve as a diocesan priest within the Archdiocese of Louisville. A bishop or archbishop ordains diocesan priests, also called secular priests, for a particular geographical area called a diocese or archdiocese. Diocesan priests usually serve in parishes, though they also may serve in schools, hospitals, prisons or diocesan offices, depending upon local needs. Diocesan priests ordained for the Archdiocese of Louisville serve in the 24 counties in Central Kentucky that make up the Archdiocese.
Matthew Hardesty will celebrate his first Mass of thanksgiving on Sunday May 29, 2 p.m. at Holy Spirit Parish (3345 Lexington Road, Louisville, Ky.). Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., Celebrates Beatification of Pope John Paul II at St. Bartholomew Parish
On Sunday, May 1, 2:30 p.m., Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., will celebrate the beatification of Pope John Paul II at a special Mass at St. Bartholomew Parish, 2042 Buechel Bank Road. Students, faculty, staff and school board members of John Paul II Academy, 3521 Goldsmith Lane, also are participating in this celebration.
The celebration will take place as part of the observance of Divine Mercy Sunday. This date is significant in John Paul II’s life. In 2000, he presided at the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, a countrywoman from his native Poland, on the Sunday after Easter and declared that this day should thereafter be known as “Divine Mercy Sunday” in honor of the saint’s lifelong effort to shed light on the mystery of divine mercy. Pope John Paul II died on April 2, just a day before the 2005 celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday. Divine Mercy Sunday focuses on the themes proclaimed in Sacred Scripture, which include the forgiveness of sins and God’s unending mercy.
In announcing this event, Archbishop Kurtz stated: “I am overjoyed to join in prayer with our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI and Catholics throughout the world to honor the beatification of Pope John Paul II on Divine Mercy Sunday. I am especially pleased that we have been able to work with our own elementary school, John Paul II Academy, on the special liturgy at St. Bartholomew. During his pontificate, Pope John Paul called upon Catholics to reflect this day on the greatness of God’s mercy, which our world needs so badly, so how fitting it is that we celebrate this beatification on Divine Mercy Sunday. I offer this Mass in thanksgiving for the profound influence Pope John Paul II had on my life and ministry as well as for his inspirational leadership that moved multitudes of persons within and beyond the Church.”

St. Lawrence Pastor Has Head Shaved for St. Baldrick Event
(Louisville, KY) On Sunday, March 20, Father Terry Langford, pastor of St. Lawrence Parish, will join several other parishioners of St. Lawrence Parish (1925 Lewiston Drive) and students and staff of Notre Dame Academy (1927 Lewiston Drive) in having his head shaved to show solidarity with children who suffer from childhood cancer and to raise money for childhood cancer research. This is part of a St. Baldrick Foundation event that will be held in the parish hall from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Saint Nicholas Academy (5501 New Cut Road) is hosting “Saint Nicholas Academy — Education in the 21st Century” on Tuesday, March 15, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. During this event, each teacher will demonstrate how the school uses technology to enhance and enrich the daily curriculum. The public is welcome.
Saint Nicholas Academy is hosting a Science Fair on Thursday, March 17, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Students in grades 6-8 will present science projects to the student body, guests and judges. Projects are evaluated on student preparation, presentation and demonstration of knowledge about the subject, and five students will receive awards. The public is welcome.
St. Nicholas Academy will host “Tap into Fitness,” a health and wellness program sponsored by the Louisville Water Company, on Thursday, April 14, 12:15-2:00 p.m. Kindergarten and fifth-grade students will learn about the food pyramid, food groups and how to choose more healthy food to eat. Activities will include demonstrations on how to measure the amount of sugar in various foods and how to read food labels to determine the intake of sugar, calories, carbohydrates and so on.

Seventeen St. Nicholas Students Win SPAVA Award
(Louisville, KY) Seventeen St. Nicholas Academy (5501 New Cut Road) students will be honored on Tuesday, April 26 by the Society for the Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence Among Adolescents (SPAVA). These students were chosen on the basis of essays that they composed featuring famous role models in history who model SPAVA principles. This award celebration will be held at Waggener High School (330 Hubbards Lane) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In response to the 1997 Heath High School shooting tragedy, Dr. Timir Banerjee founded the Society for the Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence Among Adolescents (SPAVA), a non-profit organization to help teach students a non-violent approach to life. With the support of the public, Catholic and private schools systems, trained volunteers mentor students and present interactive programs to teach respect, integrity and self-control. Dr. Banerjee also leads fund-raising efforts to maintain the operation of SPAVA as well as scholarship programs.
