September 24, 2020 (Louisville, Ky.)–The United States Department of Education announced that three Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville are 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools.  Three elementary schools serving preschool through grade 8 will be recognized: Saint Agnes School (1800 Newburg Road, Louisville, Ky.) for the fourth time (1999, 2005, 2014, and 2020). Saint Agnes is the first elementary school in the Archdiocese to receive the award four times. Saint Aloysius School (122 Mount Mercy Drive, Pewee Valley, Ky.) is receiving the award for the second time (2014 and 2020), and Saint Raphael School (2131 Lancashire Avenue, Louisville, Ky.) for the third time (1997, 2003, and 2020). Saint Raphael was the first elementary school in the Archdiocese of Louisville to receive this award in 1997.

These three schools are among ten schools: five public and two other non-public schools recognized in the state of Kentucky. Saint Agnes and Saint Raphael are among five schools (one public and four non-public) recognized in Jefferson County, and Saint Aloysius is the only school recognized in Oldham County. The Department of Education honored 317 public and 50 non-public schools nationwide.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels or for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.  Saint Agnes, Saint Aloysius, and Saint Raphael Schools received recognition as Exemplary High Performing Schools, which have the highest achieving students (the top 15%) in English and mathematics as measured by a nationally normed assessment.

The two schools join five secondary schools and 14 other elementary schools that have previously received this award one or more times.  The five secondary schools are Assumption High School, Mercy Academy, Sacred Heart Academy, Trinity High School, and Saint Xavier High School, all in Louisville. The 14 other elementary schools are Saint Albert, Ascension, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Gabriel, Holy Spirit, Holy Trinity, Saint Margaret Mary, Saint Mary Academy, Our Lady of Lourdes, Saint Patrick, and Sacred Heart Model School, all in Louisville, and Saint Dominic in Springfield, Ky. Saint James in Elizabethtown, Ky., and Saint Joseph in Bardstown, Ky.

The U.S. Department of Education will recognize these schools virtually on November 12-13, 2020. The three schools also will plan local celebrations.
