History

The Catholic parish of Greensburg in Green County began in the 1960s as a mission church. Services were held on Sunday mornings in the rear storage area of the Kentucky Utilities building. About twenty Catholics, in eight families, set up the altar, chairs, and kneeling pads each Sunday morning before Father George Bowling arrived to celebrate Mass.

Assisted by the Louisville Archdiocese Mission Promoters (LAMP), the small community built Holy Redeemer Church high on a hillside in 1966. Father Bowling described the site as “… close to Heaven. It makes one feel that way when you see these few people work together, and you realize how they are filled with the joy of knowing that their new church will be built next year.” By then there were thirty-five families, approximately the current membership.

Three large crosses on the site now overlook the south end of Greensburg.

The mission became a parish in 1969. Since then, a sequence of priests and of women religious have contributed richly by their presence and pastoral service.

Question and Answer style Adult Religious Education takes place after the 5 p.m. Monday Mass and includes pot-luck refreshments. If a legal holiday falls on a Monday (Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc.,) or if the roads are icy and dangerous, Mass is cancelled. Please call (502) 322-2857 to verify if mass is happening.
