What Will Your Legacy Be?
By Melody Denson, Director of Planned Giving, Archdiocese of Louisville
When people remember us, what will they say? Will they remember our kindness, our faith, and our generosity? Will they remember the way we loved others? As Catholics, our greatest legacy is not found in what we leave behind materially, but in the faith we pass on and the lives we touch through our witness to Christ.
A Catholic legacy is built over a lifetime. It is reflected in the prayers we teach our children and grandchildren, the values we model each day, the time we give in service to others, and the love we share within our families, parishes, and communities. Long after we are gone, these gifts continue to shape future generations and draw others closer to God.
Yet our legacy can also include thoughtful financial stewardship. Throughout Scripture, we are reminded that everything we have is a gift from God, entrusted to us only for a time. As faithful stewards, we are called to use those gifts wisely—not only during our lifetime but also in the plans we make for the future.
Including your parish, Catholic school, or the archdiocese in your estate plan is one meaningful way to continue living your faith. A charitable bequest or other planned gift is more than a financial decision; it is a statement of gratitude to God and an investment in the future of His Church. These gifts will support future priests and help ensure that generations for years to come will celebrate the sacraments, serve those in need, and encounter Christ through vibrant parish ministries.
Legacy giving is not about the size of the gift. It is about the heart behind it. Whether large or small, every planned gift joins countless others to strengthen the mission of the Church and proclaim the Gospel for years to come.
As you think about the legacy you hope to leave, consider both the spiritual and practical ways your life will continue to bear fruit. The greatest inheritance you can leave your family is a vibrant faith lived with joy and conviction. By combining that witness with careful planning, you create a lasting expression of Christian stewardship that blesses both your loved ones and the Church you cherish.
The question is not simply, “What will I leave behind?” Rather, ask yourself, “What will I leave within the hearts of those who come after me?” A legacy rooted in faith, hope, and love is one that endures for generations.
“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Matthew 6:21)
