Passionists elect Brother John Monzyk superior of Newburg Road community

Passionist Brother John Monzyk has been elected superior of the Passionist’s Sacred Heart Monastery in Louisville, part of the Passionist’s Holy Cross Province.

He succeeds Father John Schork, who now serves in the provincial headquarters in a variety of roles.

Brother Monzyk is the first religious brother to serve as superior here. He is a native of Washington, Mo., attended Bellarmine University and is a former high school teacher. He taught physics, math and chemistry.

Vatican astronomer will speak at Main Library Dec. 9

Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, an American astronomer and the director of the Vatican Observatory, will speak at an educational event titled “Beneath the Same Sky” Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York Street. Consolmagno is the winner of the 2014 Carl Sagan Medal for Excellence in Public Communication in Planetary Science.
