Program prepares Catholic School educators to be principals, administrators
May 12, 2015 (INDIANAPOLIS) – Marian University, a Catholic university serving 2,750 students in Indianapolis, announced today a partnership with the Archdiocese of Louisville to offer a scholarship to a current teacher in a Louisville Catholic school. The scholarship covers full tuition for a program that prepares teachers to become principals and fill other openings in school administration. The scholarship recipient would have the option of taking classes in Jeffersonville, Indiana, or at the university’s main campus in Indianapolis.
Marian University is offering the scholarship for its Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership with a Concentration in Catholic Education. The degree is designed for currently licensed K-12 teachers who want to become administrators, including principals, in K-12 Catholic schools. The curriculum complements the Building Level Administrator license program already offered at Marian University, essentially allowing teachers to earn both the license and the master’s degree in a shorter amount of time. The entire program can be completed in 18-24 months.
“Thanks to a grant we received in 2014 from Duke Energy, we are partnering with Greater Clark County Schools in southern Indiana to offer our Building Level Administrator program and master’s degree in Educational Leadership onsite in Jeffersonville, Indiana” Sister Jeanne Hagelskamp, director of the Marian University Academy for Teaching and Learning Leadership, said. “It seems like a perfect opportunity to expand the cohort to serve Catholic school teachers from Louisville who want to pursue the same degree, but with the specialized Concentration in Catholic Education. We’re so happy that the Archdiocese of Louisville has agreed to partner with us in announcing the scholarship, and in helping us select the recipient.”
Last year, more than 15 percent of Catholic schools in central Indiana had openings in administration. That trend is expected to continue, which is what prompted Marian University to offer the master’s degree in Educational Leadership with a Concentration in Catholic Education.
