Lay Leaders of Prayer at Funeral Vigils & Committals Workshop

The Church calls for each member of Christ’s Body—priest, deacon, layperson—to participate in the ministry of consolation: to care for the dying, to pray for the dead, to comfort those who mourn. (OCF no. 8) When a member of the clergy is not available to lead prayer at the Vigil Service or the Rite of Committal the church allows for a pastor to appoint a qualified layperson to serve in this ministry of consolation. This workshop will focus on the skills needed for a layperson to lead prayer at those Roman Catholic Funeral rites which allow for ministry by the laity.

Topics to be covered include:
• Archdiocesan guidelines for use
• Ministry of Lay Leaders of Prayer
• Leadership Skills as a Leader of Prayer
• Preparation—in advance and immediate
• Posture and Gesture
• Leading Prayer at Funeral Vigils
• Leading Prayer at Rite of Committal
• Leading Prayer at Minor Funeral Rites
• Parish Ministry Team for Funerals
