CThompsonIt is with great delight and gratitude that I receive the news that a son of the Archdiocese of Louisville, the Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson, has been appointed Archbishop of Indianapolis by Pope Francis.

Archbishop-designate Thompson has served with great distinction as a very caring, pastoral, and humble servant of Jesus Christ for the past six years as Bishop of Evansville, Indiana.  He is a hard worker and a person who always seeks the path of holiness for himself and for those with whom he serves.

It was my privilege to work closely with him in Louisville for four years before his appointment as a bishop.  During that time I witnessed his gifts of service, not only as the pastor of Holy Trinity Church but also as my Vicar General.

With roots in Marion County, Archbishop-designate Thompson, the oldest of three children, was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and he was baptized at Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Louisville. His parents, Coleman and Joyce Thompson, were born, raised, and married in Marion County, where the family lived for much of Archbishop-designate Thompson’s grade school years.

On behalf of the clergy, religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Louisville, I send our prayers, congratulations, and love to Archbishop-designate Charles C. Thompson.

Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D.
