The appointment of Father Robert Boxie III, Catholic chaplain at Howard University, as auxiliary bishop of Washington is a profound gift to our stateside Church. This appointment reflects Bishop-elect Boxie’s experience in pastoral and social ministry, especially with vocations, young adults, and campus ministry. Called to the fullness of the priesthood of Jesus Christ, as a successor to the apostles, his expertise will bring a transformative presence to the work of evangelization and missionary discipleship.
Joining me soon as an active Black Catholic bishop, Bishop-elect Boxie’s appointment is welcomed by the Knights of Peter Claver and so many wonderful organizations that serves the needs of the Black Catholic apostolate. As a fellow native son of Louisiana, I believe this appointment draws on Bishop-elect Boxie’s “priestly heart” and his background in pastoral and social ministry with particular emphasis on vocations, young adults, and campus ministry.
I offer my prayers and good wishes to Bishop-Elect Boxie as he prepares to exercise sacramental authority in harmony with Cardinal Robert McElroy to serve the People of God in the Archdiocese of Washington.
Most Reverend Shelton J. Fabre, D.D.
