Social Media Usage: 2005-2015  Pew Research

According to estimates, the number of worldwide social media users reached 1.96 billion and is expected to grow to some 2.5 billion by 2018.

Two-thirds of American adults (65%) use social networking sites (tenfold jump in the past decade)

Young adults (ages 18 to 29) are the most likely to use social media – 90%

Still usage among those 65 and older has more than tripled since 2010. Today, 35% of all those 65 and older report using social media, compared with just 2% in 2005.

There are not notable differences by racial or ethnic group: 65% of whites, 65% of Hispanics and 56% of African-Americans use social media today.

More than half of rural residents now use social media – Today, 58% of rural residents, 68% of suburban residents, and 64% of urban residents use social media.

Local Numbers

87 out of 110 parishes have a web page and 48 out of 49 schools do.  Of the 23 parishes who do not have a web page, about ½ of those have a Facebook pages.

87 out of 159 parishes and schools have a Facebook page.

16 out of 40 elementary schools have a Twitter handle.

9 out of 9 high schools have a Twitter handle.

17 out of 100 parishes have Twitter handle.
