St. Anthony parish to celebrate 140 years

St. Anthony Church, 2222 W. Market St., will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the parish at a 4 p.m. Mass May 18.

The celebration also will mark the 124th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the church.

Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will preside at the Mass and will give the homily. Franciscan Father Pius Poff, pastor, will concelebrate.

SERVICES, DEVOTIONS, MISSIONS, RETREATS

An end-to-the-school-year Mass will be celebrated by Father David Naylor for students, teachers, parents and others who want to attend at 11 a.m. May 17 at St. Anthony’s Chapel in Kindred Hospital, 1313 St. Anthony Place. Confessions will be heard at 10:30 a.m.

A caregiver’s retreat, titled “Have Mercy: Taking Care of Yourself,” will be offered May 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in McAuley Hall at Sacred Heart Village, 2120 Payne St. The retreat is free and open to the public, and an RSVP is required by May 13. Call Shelly at 895-9425.

The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites Community of the Holy Spirit will have a day of recollection entitled “Up to Jerusalem: A Journey with Christ through the Sacraments” May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Brigid Church, Baxter and Hepburn avenues. A novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 13 at St. Martin of Tours Church, 639 S. Shelby St. The rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m.

A Charismatic Mass will be celebrated by Father Christian Moore May 18 at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 770 Eastern Parkway. Before Mass, praise music will begin at 2 p.m. There will be an opportunity for personal prayer after the liturgy.

YOUNG ADULTS AND SINGLES

VOCATIONS

SUPPORT GROUPS

A support group for the divorced and/or separated meets May 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Loft 2 at St. Gabriel Church, 5505 Bardstown Road. The group is beginning a 13-month program entitled “Divorce Care.”

ARTS

A violin-piano concert with violinist Juan Carlos Ortega and pianist Adrienne Fontenot will be held at 7 p.m. May 11 at the Loretto Motherhouse, Nerinx, Ky. Also, a piano concert will be held at 7 p.m. today, May 8, and a violin concert at 7 p.m. May 9.

The Holy Name Band will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. May 12 at Sacred Heart Village, 2120 Payne St.

HERE AND THERE

The St. Stephen Martyr Church alumni committee will sponsor a “trivia night” May 17 in the church’s Marteen Room, Hess Lane and Pindell Avenue. Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital’s Healthcare Auxiliary will hold its version of “Dancing with the Stars” on May 31. The event will be held at the Moose Club, 4615 Fegenbush Lane, and will begin with a dinner at 6 p.m., followed by dance performances by Bravo Dance Studio. At 8 p.m. a dance for those attending will begin.

St. Brigid Church in Vine Grove, Ky., is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and a centennial potluck dinner is planned June 8 at 3 p.m. There will be a Mass at 6:30 p.m.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Serra Club of Louisville will hold a luncheon meeting at 11:45 a.m. May 19 at the University Club on the campus of the University of Louisville. The speaker will be Father Paul Schloemer, who will discuss his vocation.

PEOPLE

Christopher Walsh has been named the new vice president for academics at DeSales High School. Walsh succeeds Tony Medley, who has held the post of interim vice president of academics for the past year. Walsh currently is interim principal of Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Ky., and he will continue in that position through the end of the current academic year.

Jim Protenic, a teacher at Mercy Academy, has been selected to participate in the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teacher’s program this summer. The program, hosted by the Jewish Labor Committee, will take the teachers to Poland and Israel July 6 to 21.

Tom Brown, former principal at Boyle County High School, has been named athletic director at Bethlehem High School, Bardstown, Ky. He also will supervise building, grounds and transportation for the school.
