Louisville churches having parish missions

Several churches will have parish missions next week.

St. Lawrence and Incarnation churches will hold a parish mission March 14 to 16 called “Encountering Jesus — One Day at a Time.” Programs will be held at 7 p.m. each night at Incarnation Church, 2229 Lower Hunters Trace. They will be led by Conventual Franciscan Father Don Halpin.

Father Halpin also will lead morning sessions March 15 and 16 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at St. Lawrence Church, 1925 Lewiston Drive. For additional information, call the Incarnation parish office at 447-2013 or the St. Lawrence parish office at 448-2122.

Guardian Angels Church, 6000 Preston Highway, will have a parish mission presented by Father Jim Valk March 15-18. The theme is “Dealing with Loss and Transitions.” Each day, morning sessions will be held at 9:30 a.m. and evening sessions at 7 p.m. The Sacrament of Anointing will be part of the March 18 session.

SERVICES, DEVOTIONS, MISSIONS, RETREATS

Catholic Charismatic Renewal is sponsoring a Mass of praise, healing and hope March 12 at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 770 Eastern Parkway. Father Dan Lobsinger will be the celebrant, and praise music will begin at 7 p.m. Opportunities for individual prayer will be available after the liturgy.

The Helpers of God’s Precious Infants will have their monthly prayer vigil for life March 13 at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St. Mass will be at 7 a.m., followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a rosary procession to a downtown Louisville abortion clinic and Benediction at the church. SUPPORT GROUPS

New Beginnings, a support group for the widowed, separated and divorced, meets at 7 p.m. each Thursday at Church of the Epiphany, 914 Old Harrods Creek Road.

On With Life, a support group for the widowed, will meet at 7:30 p.m. March 16 at Mary Queen of Peace Church’s St. Denis campus, 4205 Cane Run Road.

The Support Group for Divorced and/or Separated will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. March 16 in Loft 1 at St. Gabriel Church, 5505 Bardstown Road. The program will be DivorceCare’s session 2, “The Road to Healing: Finding Help.”

A grief support group, led by a Hospice of Nelson County social worker, will meet at 7 p.m. March 18 at the Flaget Health Connection, 111 N. Third St. in Bardstown, Ky.

Ups and Downs, a support group for those dealing with depression and anxiety, will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 25 in the youth room of the parish office building at St. Michael Church, 3705 Stone Lakes Drive. ARTS

The Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx, Ky., will offer the following concerts, which are free and open to the public:

  • Deborah Snodgrass will give a piano concert at 7 p.m. March 19.
  • Pianist and singer Denine LeBlanc will give a concert at 3 p.m. March 21.
  • Zhiwei Zheng will give a piano concert at 7 p.m. March 24.


Six actors from the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival
will present Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” at 7 p.m. March 15 in the St. Thomas More Church gym, 6105 S. Third St. The program is free, and those attending are asked to bring a food item for the Project Hope Pantry.

Jeremy David Tarrant, organist and choirmaster at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit, will present an organ concert at 7:30 p.m. March 12 at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 443 S. Fifth St., as part of the Kelty Endowed Organ Recital Series. The concert is free and open to the public.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Priests’ Parents Club will hold its annual “Day of Reflection” with Father Donald Goetz from 1:30 to 4 p.m. March 14 in the cafeteria of Our Lady of Lourdes School, 508 Breckenridge Lane. The Serra Club of Louisville will hold a luncheon meeting at 11:45 a.m. March 15 at the University Club on the campus of the University of Louisville. The speaker will be Father John Miles, who will discuss his missionary work, including his experiences in Haiti.

The Widows or Widowers Organization will celebrate its 32nd anniversary at its monthly meeting March 16. The meeting will be held in the Mar-Teen Room at St. Stephen Martyr School, Hess Lane and Pindell Avenue. A light dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m.; orientation for newcomers will be held at 7 p.m.; and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Pat Webb will teach the electric slide dance, and Jeff Rehmet will provide music. HERE AND THERE

Three choir rehearsals for the March 30 Chrism Mass are scheduled at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 443 S. Fifth St.: 7 p.m. on March 15 and 22 and 9:30 a.m. on March 27. Persons interested in taking part in the choir can contact the Archdiocese of Louisville Office of Worship at 636-0296, ext. 1260. The Chrism Mass will be held at 7 p.m. March 30 at the Cathedral.

St. James Church will have its annual “Angelic Auction” and fish fry March 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the parish school, 1818 Edenside Ave. For information, call the parish office at 451-1420.

St. Therese Church, 1107 E. Kentucky St., will hold a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the gymnasium from 4 to 7 p.m. March 17. The event will feature fried chicken and corned beef and cabbage dinners, a cake wheel and other activities.

St. Leonard Church, 440 Zorn Ave., will host a 5K walk/run to benefit the Chuck Olmstead Memorial Fund from 8 a.m. to noon on March 13. Named in honor of the late WHAS-11 reporter Chuck Olmstead, the memorial fund’s aim is to promote awareness of and screenings for aneurysms.

EDUCATION AND ENRICHMENT

The Archdiocese of Louisville Ministry Institute is offering the following programs:

  • “Theology of Ministry.” Individuals can attend any one of the following sessions: March 11 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Barnabas Church, 3042 Hikes Lane; March 23 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Albert the Great Church, 1395 Girard Drive; April 10 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at St. Thomas Church in Bardstown, Ky.; April 19 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Martyr Church, Hess Lane and Pindell Ave.; and April 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church, 1925 Lewiston Drive. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church, 903 Fairdale Road, will offer a workshop, “Ten Secrets to a Stress-Free Home and School,” on March 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the parish hall. Kirk Martin will lead the program, which is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

A question-and-answer session on people’s choice of topics will be conducted by Deacon Dr. Patrick Harris on March 15 in the adult enrichment series presented by St. Albert the Great and St. Bernadette churches. Lucio Caruso will lead a program called “The Mass Never Ends: The Liturgy of the Word” on March 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Martha Church, 2825 Klondike Lane. The public is invited to the program, which will be held in the church.

U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie of Kentucky’s Second Congressional District will give an update on a jobs bill in Congress and on Haiti, and there will be an update on Kentucky legislative issues at a Faithful Citizenship luncheon at noon March 16. The luncheon will be held in Flaget Hall at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral.

The Men of Epiphany will host a program from 7 to 9 p.m. March 14 featuring Father Benedict Brown, a priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville and a former 17-year military chaplain in the U.S. Navy. Father Brown will discuss his career and experiences in the Iraq War and will also address the possible repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” order dealing with the service of gay and lesbian individuals in the military.

Joining the discussion will be K.C. Scull, a retired Army colonel and currently manager of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
