Sister Mary Angelita Coomes, SCN - October 6

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Mary Angelita Coomes died Oct. 6 at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was 96 and had been an SCN for 78 years.

Sister Coomes, a native of Whitesville, Ky., served in elementary and secondary education in Kentucky and Ohio for 42 years. Her first assignment was at St. Augustine School, Louisville, from 1931-34.

In retirement she served as switchboard operator at the Nazareth Motherhouse from 1986-87 and as receptionist at Nazareth Village from 1987-89. She also worked in community service as librarian at the Motherhouse from 1989-2003.

Survivors include two nieces, Mary Imogene Thompson and Dolores Lanham, and one nephew, Dr. Carroll E. Howard, all of Owensboro, Ky., and sisters in the SCN congregation.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 9 at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky. Burial was in Nazareth Cemetery.
