Sister of Charity of Nazareth Madeleine Sophie Henkel died June 24 at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was 86 and had been an SCN for 65 years.
A native of Loretto, Tenn., Sister Henkel served in education, community service and child care in Kentucky and Tennessee. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she served in community service at Holy Family convent in Louisville from 1943 to 1946 and taught at St. Benedict School, Lebanon Junction, Ky., from 1973 to 1977 and at St. Gabriel School in Louisville from 1977 to 1984. She also served as sacristan at Our Lady of Peace Hospital in Louisville from 1964 to 1988.
Survivors include two brothers, Col. Francis B. Henkel of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Justin J. Henkel of Carmel, N.Y.; three sisters, Sister of Charity of Nazareth Bernadette Maria Henkel and Wilhemina Henkel, both of Louisville, and Sister of Charity of Nazareth Mary Zita Henkel of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and sisters in the SCN congregation.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 28 at at Nazareth Home. A prayer service also was held on June 28 at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky., followed by burial in the Nazareth Cemetery.
