Sister of Charity of Nazareth Louise Maria Effinger died Oct. 20 at Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown, Ky. She was 89 and had been an SCN for 70 years.
Sister Effinger served in elementary and secondary education as a teacher, principal and bookkeeper for 44 years in Kentucky, Tennessee, Massachusetts and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught sixth grade at St. Barnabas School from 1963-64 and was principal there from 1971-81. She was office manager/bookkeeper at Presentation Academy from 1982-87.
She served in retreat ministry as secretary and bookkeeper and in community service in local community leadership in Nazareth, Ky. Sister Effinger also was bookkeeper at Russell Hall at Nazareth.
Survivors include two sisters, Helen McDonald and Emelie McDevitt, and a sister-in-law, Barbara “Bobbie” Effinger, all of Louisville; 21 nieces and nephews; 55 great-nieces and great-nephews; 15 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and sisters in her congregation.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 2 at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth. Burial was in Nazareth Cemetery.
