Sister Rita Vaughan - October 26, 2007
Sister of Charity of Nazareth Rita Vaughan, formerly Sister Mary de Padua Vaughan, died Oct. 26 at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was 70 and had been an SCN for 51 years.
A native of Louisville, Sister Vaughan served in elementary and secondary education in the Archdiocese of Louisville.
While in juniorate training and study at Nazareth College, she taught part-time at St. Monica School in Bardstown from 1959-60 and the following year at St. Joseph School in Bardstown. In Louisville, she taught first grade at St. Martha School from 1961-66, grades six and seven at St. Lawrence School from 1966-78, and was guidance counselor at Presentation Academy from 1978-90.
She also served as ward secretary part-time at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital from 1985-94 and from 1994-99 was a part-time switchboard operator at Nazareth Motherhouse.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Rita Vaughan, a resident at Nazareth Home; one brother, John Patrick Vaughan Jr. of Bellview, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Stevens of Falls Church, Va., and Rose Cornett of Louisville; and sisters in the SCN Congregation.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 29 at Nazareth Home. Burial was in the Nazareth Cemetery, Nazareth, Ky.
