14 men to be ordained permanent deacons at Cathedral Aug. 23
Fourteen men will be ordained permanent deacons for the Archdiocese of Louisville by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz at an 11 a.m. Mass Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 443 S. Fifth St.
Following is biographical information on the men, who will be assigned to parishes in the archdiocese.
Jeremiah S. Babin and his wife Susie have been married 39 years. They have four children and eight grandchildren. Babin was in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, and he is now a flight officer with UPS — flying aircraft out of Anchorage, Alaska.
The couple have been members of Holy Trinity Church since moving to the Louisville area in 1998. Babin has been a member of the RCIA team as a catechist, has served as eucharistic minister and lector and has taught in the parish school of religion. Mrs. Babin is a member of the choir and the Art and Environment Committee.
Both have completed the archdiocesan ministry program, certification in pastoral ministry from Spalding University and certification in hospital ministry from Baptist Hospital East. Mrs. Babin also has completed a certification in spiritual direction and pastoral ministry.
Babin will be assigned to Holy Trinity parish.
Gregory A. Beavin and his wife Shirley have been married 36 years and are lifetime members of St. Mary Magdalen of Pazzi Church in Payneville, Ky. They have four children — John, Deanna, Laura and Cindy — and six grandchildren — Jake, Madeline, Alyssa, Anna, Grant and Lydia.
The couple have been active in various ministries in their parish. They have also been active in their community, serving on the Meade County school board and in the Chamber of Commerce.
Beavin has been employed for 34 years as an insurance agent with Kentucky Farm Bureau, and Mrs. Beavin has worked with him in the insurance agency as a customer service representative and bookkeeper. They each received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University.
Beavin will be assigned to the parish cluster of St. Mary Magdalen of Pazzi and St. Theresa in Rhodelia, Ky.
T. Stephen Bowling is an information technology manager and analyst for Roth Development Co. He and his wife Susan have been married 18 years and have three children: Carolyne, Emily and Thomas. Mrs. Bowling is employed by the Louisville Metro Police Department in the community relations unit. They are members of St. Gabriel the Archangel parish.
Bowling is a graduate of Bethlehem High School, Bardstown, and he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration at Bellarmine University. Mrs. Bowling is a graduate of Russellville High School (Alabama), and she received a bachelor’s degree in education at Bellarmine University. She also completed the ministry formation program at Spalding University.
The couple have completed the hospital ministry training program at Baptist Hospital East. Bowling has a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University and is pursuing a master of arts degree in Catholic life and thought at St. Meinrad School of Theology.
Their activities include serving as lectors, ministers of the Eucharist, acolytes, baptismal preparation team members, Ignite Your Torch Catholic Youth Conference coordinating team, St. Vincent de Paul conference spiritual advisors and moderators of discussion group on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Bowling will be assigned to St. Gabriel parish.
Joseph D. Calvert is self-employed and works with commercial architects. He and his wife Berta have been married for 19 years and have one daughter, Heather. Mrs. Calvert teaches Spanish for the University of Louisville and Elizabethtown Community College extension at Fort Knox. She retired as coordinator for the English as a Second Language program for Jefferson County Public Schools.
Calvert has bachelor’s degrees in English and mechanical engineering, and Mrs. Calvert has master’s degrees in Spanish and education. Both have completed the ministry formation program. Calvert has received certification in pastoral ministry from Spalding University, in hospital ministry from Baptist Hospital East and for completing the basic Catholic catechist’s course of Jesuit Father John Hardon. He also completed training and made house visits for Hospice of Louisville.
Calvert has co-chaired the Walk for Life and bus trip to Washington for the March for Life while serving on the Right to Life of Louisville board. He is past state director of Kentucky Youth for Life, senior founder of Generation JP II Inc., and sacristan for the Ignite Your Torch Youth Conference. He has served at the parish level as lector, acolyte, hourly coordinator for perpetual eucharistic adoration and respect life chairman. He is a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and associate member of the Legion of Mary.
The couple also serve at the Kentucky State Reformatory in LaGrange.
Calvert will be assigned to St. Christopher Church, Radcliff, Ky.
Darryl J. Diemer and his wife Susan have been married for 21 years. They have two sons, James and Michael.
Diemer attended St. Stephen Martyr School and is a graduate of St. Xavier High School. He is a salesman at Ed Kute Electric Supplies, Inc., where he has worked for more than 25 years. Mrs. Diemer is employed as coordinator of children’s faith formation at Holy Trinity parish.
The Diemers are members of St. Gabriel the Archangel parish. Diemer serves as a lector and eucharistic minister, and Mrs. Diemer serves as a cantor and parish council member. Both have received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University.
Diemer will be assigned to St. Gabriel the Archangel parish.
Scott R. Haner and his wife JoAnn have been married 27 years. They have two daughters, Julie and Lauren. Haner works with Yum! Brands, Inc., in the development department.
The couple are members of St. Patrick Church. Haner is a music minister and lector, has served on the pastoral council and school board and is a member of a men’s Bible study/fellowship group. Mrs. Haner is a sacristan and an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist and participates in RCIA and women’s Bible study. Both have worked in parish youth ministry. Each received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University, and they trained in hospital ministry at Baptist Hospital East.
Both earned bachelor of science and master’s degrees from Purdue University. Haner, a graduate of St. Xavier High School, has served on the board of directors of the International Franchise Association, Project Women and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Louisville and Nazareth Farm in West Virginia.
Haner will be assigned to St. Patrick parish.
Robert J. Hart is employed at Ichikoh Mitsuba in Shelbyville, Ky., as human resource manger. He and his wife Kathy have been married 34 years and have four children — Robbie Hart, Tricia Hartman (Brad), Tommy Hart and Richie Hart — and one grandson, Ben.
The couple are members of Annunciation parish in Shelbyville, where they serve as eucharistic ministers, lectors and members of the Social Service Committee. Both serve as volunteer chaplains for the local hospital; are members of the community Ministerial Alliance; are involved in nursing home ministry and volunteer for Centro Latino, an outreach organization for the local Hispanic community.
Hart is a graduate of Trinity High School and Bellarmine University. The Harts received certificates in pastoral ministry from Spalding University.
Hart will be assigned to Annunciation parish.
Theodore C. Luckett and his wife Melinda have been married 31 years. They have three children — Bryan (Shannon, his wife), Brandon and Teddy — and three grandchildren: McKinsey, Max and Macey.
Luckett is a retired sergeant from the Louisville Police Department and is employed at Catholic Charities as coordinator of criminal justice ministry. Mrs. Luckett is a registered nurse at Baptist Hospital East, and she is also involved in the Visitation House, a transitional house for women released from prison operated by Catholic Charities.
The couple are members of St. Aloysius Church, Pewee Valley. They are active in prison ministry at Kentucky State Reformatory and Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women. They have completed the archdiocesan ministry program and received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University and certification in hospital ministry from Baptist Hospital East.
Luckett will be assigned to St. Aloysius parish in Pewee Valley.
Thomas M. McNally and his wife Marysue have been married 32 years. They have two children — Chad and Sara — and a grandson.
McNally is retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and Mrs. McNally is retired from BellSouth. Both are employed as staff members at St. Aloysius Church, Pewee Valley, where they are parishioners.
McNally has a bachelor’s degree from Bellarmine University and a master’s degree from the University of Louisville. He has received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University and has completed three units in the Archdiocese of Louisville Ministry Institute in liturgical ministry.
McNally’s parish involvement includes parish council member/chair, administration committee member/stewardship chair, lector/coordinator, eucharistic minister, sacristan/coordinator, altar server trainer, adult and youth, usher ministry, worship committee, parish long-range planning and building committee.
Mrs. McNally’s parish activities include parish council, PTO and eucharistic minister.
McNally will be assigned to Immaculate Conception parish, LaGrange, Ky.
P. Stephan Phelps and his wife Helen have been active in parish ministries as lectors, acolytes, eucharistic ministers, RCIA and sacramental preparation. They are members of the Diaconate Vocations Committee and will serve as the class companion couple for the ordination class of 2012.
They have been married for 28 years.
Phelps recently completed the design of a new diaconate Web site and is leading an effort to produce a diaconate information video for the archdiocese.
Mrs. Phelps retired from Celanese and Rhone-Poulenc as manager of human resources. She serves on the Nativity Academy at St. Boniface development committee, is a docent at the Archdiocese of Louisville History Center and is a eucharistic minister at Norton Hospital.
Phelps’ education includes the University of Louisville and Spalding University, where he earned a certificate in pastoral ministry. He has studied canon law at St. Meinrad School of Theology and the Catholic University School of Canon Law and is pursuing a graduate degree in canon law from St. Mary’s University-Minnesota. He is an advocate for the Metropolitan Tribunal and a member of the Canon Law Society of America.
Phelps will be assigned to the Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Boniface parish.
Mark J. Rougeux and his wife Kim have been married 34 years. They have three sons — John (Sara), Joseph (Alice) and Michael— and are members of St. Patrick Church.
Rougeux was a partner in Duke Realty and for the last 20 years has been involved in ministry. He taught theology at St. Xavier High School for nine years and is currently on sabbatical.
The couple graduated from the University of Kentucky. Rougeaux received his MBA from the University of North Carolina and a master’s degree in theology from The Catholic University of America and is working on a doctor of ministry at Catholic University. He is director of the RCIA program at St. Patrick and has been involved in various ministries such as lector, eucharistic minister, Boy Scout chaplain, men’s Bible study, Joseph of Arimathea Society, Wayside Christian Mission and adult education.
Mrs. Rougeux, a registered nurse, is a volunteer with Opportunities for Life. She is vice-president of the parish council and is a eucharistic minister, lector, Bible study member/facilitator and minister to the sick. She has completed training to serve as an auditor with the Tribunal of Louisville, and she volunteers at Wayside Christian Mission.
The couple lector for Mass of the Air, have been a marriage preparation couple and have received certificates in pastoral ministry from Spalding University.
Rougeaux will be assigned to St. Patrick parish.
Tim E. Stewart is employed as a corporate materials manager for Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp. He and his wife Tommie have been married 22 years and have two daughters — Leah Meeks and Hollie Stewart — and two grandchildren. They are members of Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Agnes parishes.
Stewart graduated from DeSales High School, attended the University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work and has a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University. Mrs. Stewart is an administrative assistant/office manager at Sacred Heart Academy and is a eucharistic minister at the school and her parish. She also participates in the Joseph of Arimathea program in which students attend and serve at funerals for the indigent.
Stewart will be assigned to Our Mother of Sorrows parish.
Scott R. Turner and his wife Wanda have been married 28 years. They have three sons and one daughter-in-law — Joshua, Joanna, Michael and Kyle. They are members of St. Thomas Church in Bardstown, Ky.
They each received a certificate of pastoral ministry from Spalding University.
Turner is a carpenter employed by Raisor Construction. Mrs. Turner is a registered nurse at Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare.
The couple are active in parish ministries. They are co-chairpersons of the parish picnic and eucharistic ministers. Turner is a minister to the homebound, lector, usher, eucharistic minister trainer, altar server trainer and sacristan and is active in RCIA and worship committee.
Turner will be assigned to the clustered parishes of St. Thomas and St. Monica in Bardstown.
Francisco J. Villalobos, a native of Mexico, came to United States in 1966 and was raised in Chicago. He entered the U.S. Army after graduating from high school and retired from the Army in 2001 after 21 years of service.
He his wife Monika were married in 1983, and they have two children, Paco and Nastacia.
The family came to Shelbyville, Ky., in January 2001 when Villalobos was plant manager for Samtec Inc. In 2005, he became a full-time pastoral associate serving Church of the Annunciation in Shelbyville and St. John Chrysostom in Eminence. He is also the Hispanic minister for Immaculate Conception Church in LaGrange.
Mrs. Villalobos is employed at Jewish Hospital. The couple are active in parish ministries, and each received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Spalding University.
Villalobos will be assigned to the parish cluster of Annunciation and St. John Chrysostom churches.
