Deacon Joseph P. Wheatley, a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of Louisville, died May 3 at Providence Retirement Home in Clarksville, Ind. He was 70.

Deacon Wheatley was a retired manager for South Central Bell and served as chaplain at Norton Hospital for 14 years. He also assisted at Mount St. Francis Retreat Center in Floyd County, Ind.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; a son, Jeff, and daughter, Jennifer; and four grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, May 8, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1752 Scheller Lane, in New Albany, Ind. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount St. Francis Retreat Center.
