Approximately 700-800 teachers from 39 Catholic elementary schools will gather on Friday, August 13 to celebrate the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. This event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Churchill Downs. (See agenda below.)

Educators will hear a keynote from Dr. Michael Carotta. Dr. Carotta serves as the consultant for adolescent catechesis at Our Sunday Visitor magazine and has worked with the spirituality of youth for more than 30 years in educational, pastoral and clinical settings. He teaches graduate courses on adolescent spirituality at several Catholic universities and is a national consultant for Harcourt Religion Publishers.

His newest books include Have Faith, a confirmation resource (Twenty-Third Publications), and Lincoln Park, a mystery series with spiritual insights for junior high youth that he co-authored with theologian John Shea (Harcourt Religion). Over the last ten years, Mike’s work has expanded into the area of vocational renewal. He and his wife Catherine are authors of Sustaining the Spirit: Callings, Commitments and Vocational Challenges, published by Twenty-Third Publications.

Dr. Carotta’s topic is “Fishing the River.” He will speak with educators about how their unique talents, gifts and experiences come together to create effective Catholic schools.

The Archdiocese of Louisville has 48 Catholic elementary and secondary schools serving seven counties of Central Kentucky.
