(Louisville, Ky.) Ascension School (4600 Lynnbrook Drive) will hold its third annual Ascension Classes for Enrichment (ACE) event on Monday and Tuesday, May 23-24, 2011, from 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (with a lunch break from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.). For these classes, parish members, parents, business people and representatives from state and local service agencies will join Ascension’s faculty to provide a variety of enrichment opportunities for the students.
Enrichment classes will be held for students ages pre-K to grade 8. WLKY news anchor Karen Roby, an Ascension School alumna, is one of 40 volunteer speakers who will be sharing their talents and expertise with Ascension students. Speakers also include professors from the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Agents, 4H club leaders, Paws with a Purpose volunteers, Bluegrass Search & Rescue teams, teachers from St. Xavier High School’s robotics and music departments, translators from Brazil, and Ascension School staff and alumni.
As a service project in conjunction with the enrichment classes, Ascension students have joined the Jefferson County 4H Clubs and the 2011 University of Kentucky Denim Drive in collecting blue jeans to recycle into home insulation for Habitat for Humanity homes. Some of the jeans collected during the ACE event will be sewn into bean bags for the school’s physical education department. Blue jeans and denim may be donated to the school during the month of May or to the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Office (810 Barret Avenue) throughout the summer.
