Readers’ Reward at Ascension School
(Louisville, Kentucky) On Wednesday, September 12, 53 students at Ascension School (4600 Lynnbrook Drive) will get a shopping trip to Borders Books as a reward for participating in a unique summer reading program. Students will shop at the Borders Books (4600 Shelbyville Road) in the Shelbyville Road Plaza from 8:50 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Last May, students in grades K-7 were invited to participate in a summer reading program. To be eligible for an incentive this fall, students were required to read at least 2 selections per week for 10 weeks from at least 8 literary genres and write a short reflection paper on each selection. Students could choose from fiction, non-fiction, news articles, magazine articles, poetry, chapters of the Bible, biographies, and autobiographies. The 53 students who participated turned in more than 1,000 reviews.
Each student who completed the program received from $15 to $25 in awards to spend at Borders. Amounts were determined by the quality of the reviews, the neatness of the work, and the level of difficulty of the reading. The principal reviewed each of the packets and met with students in August to unveil the incentive. Students are excited about shopping with their awards!
