Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and special guest Bishop Abraham Desta from Ethiopia will make the opening remarks and offer the invocation. Archbishop Kurtz met Bishop Desta while on a Catholic Relief Services trip to Ethiopia, and Bishop Desta is now returning the visit. He shepherds the Meki Vicariate, a vast region of southern and eastern Ethiopia.
After lunch, the program will feature a keynote address by veteran St. Francis of Assisi educator Fred Whittaker, who will speak about the value of Catholic education and the special ministry of teachers. The award presentation will follow the keynote address at approximately 12:45 p.m.
These teachers serve 21,000 students in 48 Catholic schools in seven counties of the Archdiocese of Louisville.
