HISTORY
The Catholic parish of Greensburg in Green County began in the 1960s as a mission church. Services were held on Sunday mornings in the rear storage area of the Kentucky Utilities building. About twenty Catholics, in eight families, set up the altar, chairs and kneeling pads each Sunday morning before Father George Bowling arrived to celebrate Mass.

Assisted by the Louisville Archdiocese Mission Promoters (LAMP), the small community built Holy Redeemer Church high on a hillside in 1966. Father Bowling described the site as “… close to Heaven. It makes one feel that way when you see these few people work together and you realize how they are filled with the joy of knowing that their new church will be built next year.” By then there were thirty-five families, approximately the current membership.

Three large crosses on the site now overlook the south end of Greensburg.

The mission became a parish in 1969. Since then, a sequence of priests and of women religious have contributed richly by their presence and pastoral service.

The parish provides religious education for elementary and middle school children. High school students participate in the CCD youth group in Campbellsville. There is a Bible study session for adults and youth, held after Mass. Holy Redeemer parish supports the local food bank and recently voted to support the Family Resource Center, located at the local elementary school, which assists needy children and families.

This close-knit community of about 75 parishioners celebrates weddings, baptisms and confirmations and supports the families of departed members. Monthly pot luck dinners and bi-monthly ‘town meetings’ take place in the renovated hospitality/reception area. Holy Redeemer represents a welcoming Catholic presence in Green County.
