Ursuline Sisters of Louisville

The Ursuline Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Louisville are a congregation of women religious in the Roman Catholic church, rooted in the spirit and tradition of St. Angela Merici. They are committed to a life of prayer, community and participation in the teaching mission of the church.

The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville have a rich history that dates back to 1858 in Louisville and are in ministry nationwide and in South America. They minister as teachers, healthcare workers, administrators, chaplains and social service workers.

Mission Statement

Teaching Christian living is our corporate ministry, and it cuts across socio-economic, racial and national boundaries to assist women, men and children to live more fully and to develop a personal relationship with God.

Charism

The Charism of Angela and the Charism of the Ursulines of Louisville is a contemplative love of God and a resulting openness and eagerness to serve the needs of others.

• There is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on every First Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m..
• You may want to try attending Mass – the Sunday Liturgy is at 11:15 a.m.; Mass is at 4:15 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday;, 7:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday.

Curious about what goes on in a Carmelite Monastery? Join them for the following events:

• The Carmelite Sisters will have Vespers and Benediction every Sunday, according to the following schedule:
  
  -Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent: at 4:45 p.m.
  -Beginning with the First Sunday of Lent: at 5 p.m.
  -From the Feast of Corpus Christi until Fall, the Sisters do not have Vespers and Benediction
  -Fall (around the end of September) until the First Sunday of Advent: 5 p.m.
• On the First Friday of every month: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from the end of 8 a.m. Mass until Vespers at 4:45 p.m.
• In July: Annual Novena in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, beginning on July 8th and running through July 16th. The celebration of Mass is at 7 p.m., preceeded by the Rosary at 6:45 p.m. every evening.
• Daily Mass: At 8 a.m.; is open to the public on every day except Sunday.

All services will take place in the Monastery Chapel, located on Newburg Road between Calvary Cemetery and St. Agnes School.

Experience Lectio Divina

Thirsting for God? Longing to know His Will?

If you are a young man or woman 18 to 40 years of age you are welcome to join us for an experience of Eucharistic adoration and contemplative listening to the Word of God. Please come to the chapel of the Little Sisters of the Poor on the first Wednesday of the month from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

We are located on Audubon Plaza Drive, just down the street from Audubon Hospital.

We are monastic women seeking God through the Benedictine tradition of community life, prayer, hospitality, and service to others. By our life and work, we commit ourselves to be a presence of peace as we join our sisters and brothers in the common search for God. We serve in education, parish ministry, the social services, health care, retreat and spiritual direction, and mission work. We do not identify ourselves with one specific ministry; rather we respect each individual’s gifts as given by God. A college education is helpful but not required. We have 185 members, 11 of whom are in initial formation. We encourage women, ages 20-40, who earnestly seek God and want to live a balanced life of prayer and work to inquire about our monastic lifestyle.

What's It All About?

The Women’s Discernment Group is a new group sponsored by the Vocations Office of the Archdiocese of Louisville and conducted by representatives of women's religious orders. Meetings are planned for the last Sunday of each month and are open to women 18 and older who are considering the possibility of a call to the religious life. That’s what it is, and here’s what it’s all about:
 
Prayer: We recognize the central place that prayer holds in the lives of those seeking to know and live God’s will. Prayer will hold an important place in our gatherings, and all of the meetings will be based on a scriptural theme, taken from the Gospel reading for that particular Sunday.

Exploration: Naturally, participants in the group will be curious about the charisms of the various religious orders. Opportunities to explore these will be provided, and the women religious attending the meetings will always be ready to answer questions or provide information.

Support: This is a key point of the Women’s Discernment Group. It is hoped that the women participating in the meetings will find support in meeting with other women with the same questions and concerns.

Enrichment: Another word one might use here would be “knowledge.” Many women may have questions about the Catholic faith or want to know more about various aspects of it. Time will be provided for discussions along those lines, which will hopefully result in some enrichment in the faith.

Discernment: And here’s the basic point of the Women’s Discernment Group! Through discussion, exploration and experience of the other aspects of the group, we hope that the women taking part in the meetings will arrive at a better understanding - a more thorough discernment - of their particular call, whether it indeed be to the religious life or to some other vocation.

Meeting details: All meetings are scheduled for 4 p.m. on the last Sunday of the month. They will be held from January through May and September through December at Bellarmine University in the Fireplace Room in Horrigan Hall, and meetings from June through August are held at the Cathedral Undercroft. The plan is to use the Gospel of the day as the basis or theme for each particular meeting. Meetings are open to women ages 18 and older. Any changes in the time, date or location will be publicized well in advance if they become necessary.
