Witnesses of Truth – Stand Firm and Speak Kindly

I just completed an article for Our Sunday Visitor about the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling and where the Church goes from here.  A link to the complete article is below.

The recent decision by the Supreme Court to change the definition of marriage requires a response. I see the decision as a “tragic error” not because I want to demean any person but rather because of my concern for the common good and the good of all. Jesus, with great […]

Statement on the Occasion of the Promulgation of Laudato Si’

With an open heart and gratitude, I welcome Laudato Si’. In this beautiful and extensive treatment on care for our common home, the Holy Father calls all people to consider our deep and intertwined relationships with God, our brothers and sisters, and the gifts that our Creator has provided for our stewardship. Drawing extensively from the teaching of his predecessors, the Pope teaches that care for the things of the earth is necessarily bound together with our care of one […]

Mexican priests minister to Hispanics

untitledAs boys growing up in the mining state of Guanajuato, Mexico, both Father Carlos Conde and Father Ismael Hernández said they’d always admired priests, but never thought they’d become priests themselves.

That was a couple of decades ago. Last month, the priests — both from the Diocese of León in Guanajuato, Mexico — arrived in Louisville to minister to the growing number of Hispanic Catholics in this area.

The growth of Latinos in the […]

Statement on Race Relations

At this week’s spring meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in St. Louis, the full body of Bishops showed support for a statement on race relations that was my presidential address on June 10, the opening day of the meeting.

Here is the statement:

BeFrienders ministry seeks help for hospitals

befrienderA hospital stay can be filled with anxiety and, sometimes, outright fear.

An outreach ministry in the Archdiocese of Louisville — the BeFriender Hospital Ministry — seeks to alleviate some of that anxiety by providing a prayerful presence for patients and their families.

And that ministry needs more volunteers to continue its work.

“This is a way of reaching out in hope to those who are experiencing loss or suffering,” […]

Interview with Vatican Radio

On Tuesday, June 9, I talked with Christopher Wells of Vatican Radio about this week’s spring meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which is being held in St. Louis, MO.  He asked about our agenda for the meeting, including the statement on racism released by the Bishops, about the upcoming Synod on Families, and about our Holy Father’s trip this fall.

You can listen to the interview here.

Two Assemblies and a Visit to Ukraine: Learning and Fraternity

The first three weeks of June will be great adventures for me.  This week at Saint Meinrad, I join brother priests from throughout the Archdiocese at our annual Presbyteral Assembly. Next week brings the semiannual meeting of the U.S. Bishops in St. Louis.  The third week, I will make a fraternal visit, along with Archbishop Cupich of Chicago, to Ukraine. I hope to write later this month about this visit to the bishops in Ukraine.

All three of these adventures involve […]
